About The Club
Ice hockey Club Aarhus (also known as IKA or IK-Aarhus) was established on 22/7 2008 based on a wish to have an ice hockey club in Aarhus that will work primarily to strengthen and develop youth teams. Other clubs have previously tried to establish elite ice hockey in this town but we considered that our essential effort was to begin to start recruiting and maintaining new junior and youth players. At the same time it was important to establish a solid club structure together with a sensible and healthy economy which could make this work possible. This should occur through at organizational level, together with having good trainers that could maintain a system throughout the coaching work. This work is of course a continual process, and must be maintained. But we consider that we have come far, being now in our 4th season.
The First Season (2008-09)
Th first season was characterized by a lot of organizational work and a tightly steered economy. Therefore, the club established junior teams from U7-9 and up to and including U17. Our senior members were obliged to play 2nd Division as there economically is a large difference between playing junior and senior ice hockey, in the form of increased subscriptions to the Danish Ice hockey Association, referees, trainers, and transport (the U17 tournament is played in Jutland whereas the senior tournaments are played nationally).
Season 2009-10 We were able to make additional initiatives already in our second season to maintain and develop our youth players. The club was approved to be part of the ESSA (Elite Sports Academy) concept and had 5 players accepted. These players finished their sports and school year as ESSA graduates. 5 players were again approved in the following season. To make this possible, a 1st Division team was established in addition to the junior teams. The reason for choosing this and not a U20 team was so that we could maintain a group of young players that were too old to play U20. This 1st Division team became a success. The team played games at a high level and matched the tournaments other teams. But not least, a success because of our wish to have focus at our young players was achieved.
Season 2010-11
In the season 2010-11 the development of the club has been even better. We have now 200 active players and the wish to recruit young players has been achieved in that there has been a very great influx of the younger age-groups. At the same time there are so many players in the eldest age-groups that there are both a U20 and a 1st Division team. Additionally there is a large influx on 2nd. Division/Old-timers teams.
